"The Residenz is a fine, square building adjoining the Cathedral, with two main entrances and posted at each 2 Grenadier Guards" (Heinrich Pichler on the Residenz).
The inner courtyard with Arcades of the Residenz offers many possibilities for events ranging from summer fête, through open-air cocktail reception, to concert performance.
There is a long tradition of splendid festivities in and around the Residenz. Under Prince-Archbishop Marcus Sitticus von Hohenems (1612-1619), the carnival season saw a close succession of theatre and opera performances, sleigh-rides and masked parades. Prestigious festivities were often turned to advantage for public relations, with the outdoor areas and even "half the town" included.
